After years of writing and design, I’m excited to share my 160-page book-project focused on the elements and principles of design, and the messages they communicate. Created for artists and non-artists alike, the book is a cheat sheet on how visuals influence the way we interpret art, media, and the world around us. Before moving into the next stage of production, I’m inviting you to help choose the final cover design by voting for the version that speaks to you the most.
This is about how the elements and principals of design come together to create a visual message in everyday life. Not just for artists, but also the observer who just wants to participate in the world in a new way.
Which Cover Speaks to You?
Observing Everyday Life
Think and Communicate Art
Museum Mouth
Pigeons
This book is not just for artists, but also for observers. You can just look around you and find the art in buildings, cars, and advertisements. It's not just for painters and graphic designers. Art is everywhere. The idea of observing the world reminds me of people-watching in the city. It's the ultimate observation spot. I thought about the act of observing and watching the world go by, and it made me think of my patio doves. They eat enough, and then they spend the rest of the day awake and watching. Just watching people walk by, watching sellers sell, advertisements, cars, buildings. They are the ultimate observers.
Speaking
For this cover, I was thinking about how speech is the go-to acceptable language in the world right now, but there are so many other types of communication. And so many types that we use every day. With this cheat sheet of a book, you can learn how to think and speak in art. To symbolize this, I have a person talking, but both their head and speech bubble are lines, shapes, and arrows instead of words.
Museum Mouth
This was actually the first design I did. I have been told it is creepy, though. The idea was to mock up the interior of an art museum, with a giant mouth installation hanging on the wall. A visual and representational symbol for speech, talking, and communication. Someone has made it; some people are observing it. People are maybe drawing their conclusions. A meta of speech and visual communication mixed with observation and art.
